Small World
[DOW 7901]

Small World, put out by Days of Wonder Games, is a fun game for 2 to 5 players that takes about 2 hours to play for beginners. It won the 2010 Games Magazine Game of the Year award, and it really does deserve it.

In Small World, you play the leader of a civilization (some of my friends insist they are the patron deities of the civilization) and your job is to conquer territory. More territory equals more gold and the player with the most gold wins. However, civilizations can only go so far, conquer only so much territory before they become overextended and their territories are ripe for plundering from other players. When that happens, you can abandon your current civilization and choose a new one and begin the process all over again. Your old civilization remains in place, a shadow of its former glory, waiting to be conquered by your new civilization or another player's conquering horde.

Each civilization is a unique combination of a race and an adjective. For example, you can play Flying Amazons or Merchant Halflings. Each adjective and race has unique abilities. From above, the Flying adjective allows a race to conquer any territory, not just adjacent ones. The merchant adjective allows for the accumulation of more wealth than normally allowed.

Overall, the rules are very easy to understand, but there are a LOT of pieces, so I suggest this is not a game for the very young (Days of Wonder lists it as good for ages 8 and up). Due to the randomizing nature of the adjective and race combinations, each game is entirely new.
