For Christmas I received Imperial, by Rio Grande games.

It is set during the Imperial age with 6 empires to be controlled, France, Great Britain, Italy, Austria-Hungary, Russia and Germany. But this game has a twist. Instead of controlling one empire for the whole game, each player is an investor in multiple countries. The player with the most invested gets to decide what the empire does, and that means that the empires can change hands throughout the game.

It is like a Risk / Acquire mashup!

Anyway, I enjoyed playing it against my brother, but I'm interested in getting a 4, 5 or 6 player game together some time. So if you are interested, let me know.

Imperial Gameboard

Here is a look at the English side of the board

yes, the board is double sided, one side is English, one in German. All the game pieces, money and cards are of excellent quality and, where applicable, double sided with English on one side and German on the other. Very clever design.

Imperial Gameplay

I played a two player game of Imperial with Joe recently and it was very entertaining. I love strategy games, and this game provides a twist on most strategy games. In the two player game I found that I was not too worried about building up "my" empires. Instead, as the keys to the game became more clear, I became more focused on using my control over the various empires to play one off of the other to my own monetary gain, which is the key to victory. It felt strange at first to "attack myself" but in the end it proved fruitful and really gave me a feeling of being a puppet master, which I think is what the game designers were shooting for.

I think this game would play quite differently with more players, and would love to see how it would play out.

Imperial Two Player

Chris and I played another two player game while on Vacation. I'm really looking forward to playing a more than two player version of Imperial sometime.

I lost again, though I think that it was one fatal mistake I made because I was tired that caused me to lose. The points didn't show how close of a game it was and both Chris and I were jockeying for position until the last move. This is definitely a finance game that involves war and not a war game that has money.

So, who wants to play a game with us and try it out?
